Bill Kaulitz in talk: "I don't want to wake up at 5:30 ever again"

Tokio Hotel – singer Bill about his bad school days, the patronity of experienced managers and his autograph.
Bill Kaulitz sits down, takes a cup of coffee and feels comfort on the sofa of one hotel in Hamburg with a pillow under his arm. The singer of Tokio Hotel looks like everybody already knows. Hood-sweater, cowboy boots, jeans with rivet belt, black lion hair. He's tense, it's his first talk today. When he is answering, he's using a lot words like "irgendwie" (somehow), "so" (like that), "halt" (almost), "schon" (already) and "total" (totally) – the most of them are cut from the interview. He is a boy, but a lot of the things he says sound very mature. Too mature? He will be 18 years old on the 1st of September.
jetzt.de: Do you have a lot of stres?
Bill: We have many appointments, but we came from a vacation and becouse of that...
Where have you been?
The Maldives.
It's really contrary to your songs, which talk a lot about overcoming the world.
The new single "Übers Ende der Welt" is actually a positive song. We're saying that nobody should be affraid to get out of his everyday life.
How did an everyday before Tokio Hotel look like?
I woke up at 5:30 every morning – that is a horror for me, my twin brother and I are real longsleepers. One hour later a bus drove us to school, then 8 hours of school lessons untill 15:30 and then again with the bus over all villages back home. Our village was always the last one and I finally came home at 4:30; and then again studying. Our school in Wolmirstedt was hard in comparison with the schools in Magdeburg, where my friends went. I absolutely wanted out of there.
When did you left the school?
I was still 3 weeks in the 10th grade, then we left it.
Do you still have contact to your school mates?
My best friend also went to my school. We're talking on the phone all the time.
What does your best friend do now?
He's now at the 11th grade – I would be also there – and he'll make his abitur next year. He is also very cool boy, I really like him. He wants to do something with computers later.
You are at the moment actually still in school; in the internet school in Bochum. They only have something like 35 students. How does that function?
That's like an internet university. Tom and I get the stuff that we must do. Everything must be handwritten, that's how it's sure that we're doing it all ourselves. We get as an addition our tasks and teaching programs with e-mail. But it goes really slowly, becouse we have a lot of work to do.
The "real" school can be really annoying, but it's also good. You meet new people in the class, hang out with them – don't you miss that?
No, I've always tought that it's bad. I didn't have many friends in my school. I came there in the morning and I was always in the bad mood. But lot of them came from holidays and thought: "Cool, now I can see you all again!" I've always wanted to have summer holidays and I acually always had only arguements with teachers.
Why?
Tom and I were in 7th grade splitted in different classes. Teachers couldn't deal with the fact that we always had a clear oppinion. And I also knew my rights very well.
Which rights?
When the teacher doesn't correct your tests in certain period of time, they don't count anymore. I knew stuff like that and I always argued becouse of it.
Are your parents still trying to educate you? Are you argueing?
I argued only a little with my mum. She raised us that way, that we became early indenpendent. She has also never made my homework with me. And when I got a bad grade, I came home and she took me to her arms and comforted me. Becouse she knows that I'm ambitious. I'm a perfectionist. School made me sick, but I knew that I need it.
Can you tell three things that you learned in the past years?
The most important thing is responsibility.
For other people?
Excatly, but also for myself. And respect and: making your point in life. Of course, everybody wants to tell you how to do it: "Oh, we're already 20 years in bussines, we know how it goes." It is hard for me to accept other oppinions.
Why do you know excatly what you want?
Becouse our band exists for a long time now. Gustav, Georg, Tom and I have oganised our preformances ourselves before, we made our CDs ourselves and hanged posters. I didn't want that somebody suddenly comes and says "This is now our band. You are now here under the contract and you have to do everything we want."
Isn't it a strange feeling with 15 to negotiate with adults who want to earn money with you?
This was a big problem for us. There were things like: "Oh, they are only children and they don't know which decisions they have to make!" I resisted that from the start. And our producers also met us like that – we have been making our album for two years, then we went to the records company. They told to the records company: "They want it like that."
What, for example?
Above all, the style. It was important for me. I didn't want that somebody says: "Hm, you are now a boyband and you have to wear the same clothes or you all have to wear white shirts and black pants."
We have counted how many style directions can we find on you: there is punk, rock, wave, manga, 80s with David Bowie. Where did that mix come from?
I have always worn what I wanted, I didn't want to express nothing with that. It developed after a Halloween party, where I was masked like a vampire. For example, I found black nail polish totally cool.
You became a loudspeaker of the young people, but you have no youth yourself anymore – you can't go out normally anymore, you can't try nothing...
That's true. I can't just go to the cinema when I want. I have to put on the hood, dress a bit different. That's sad. And I can see my friends and my family rarely. But at least I look back and think: I'll never again have to wake up at 5:30 and go to school.
Mobile phone cameras didn't make your life easier, right?
Sometimes I just hate this invention. Before, when I heard stars talking about paparazzi, I tought: They shouldn't think always that way. But when you live that kind of life yourself, you notice how annoying can it be. I hate those paparazzis.
A lot of people can't start liking Tokio Hotel and they also say it. Is it hard to stand all this teasing?
Hm, Tommy and I have always had it in the school. We've always looked like a bit different. I've aslo come to the scool with make up. A lot of teachers couldn't live with that. I don't want to know what were they talking in the teacher's room. But I had fun with it. I wanted that people discuss about me and the band. You could hear then also «Buuh» in the clubs. But that's okay, I don't wan't even today to have the audience that applauds normally. People never clap hands at our preformances, they always scream. I think it's much better.
Why do you acttract them so much?
I don't know exactly. There are people who come to the concerts with T-shirts and posters with sayings "f**k Tokio Hotel". I think it's weard that they're doing so much work, you really have to think about it. I think that those reactions have a lot to do with our looks and our age. It's hard for older guys to have younger guys as an idol.
What do you think, what do you mean to your fans? What do they see in you?
Some of them live for the songs, write storys and books. I've always tought about what does Nena do in her songs; I was thinking about what is she doing at the moment when I was sitting at the scool desk. My best friend is Ärtzte fan and he does the same thing about them. Everybody should be a fan of something for some time and live after that. I think that it's important to find your personality
Do you know who you are?
I am the type that does everything the way I feel like doing and I'm very short tempered. I'm like my mother. Tom is, how should I say, more professional. He's like my father. Even if we are identical twins. Sometimes we dream the same things.
And one more question: I have collected autographs and also always practiced my signature – for the not-probable case that I'll ever have to give one...
...yes, I've also done that!
Has your signature changed?
Yes, a little bit. In the beggining I've always singed in this way. (signature 1) Like that. And in the meanwhile, becouse it always have to be very quick, everything went over one another and now it looks like this. (signature 2) I've found it cool, with such a big «B» to sign and I have practiced it a lot! Georg has, for example, so boring signature, he has never practiced it. He writes like that he's writing with his left hand. But I've always wanted that it looks stylish.
Now you already have some practise.
Yes, but it's a very important thing for an artist when he gives autograph for the first time.
